    Reign Awards Update: Judging Completed!

SMPS Seattle’s annual Reign Awards celebrates the outstanding efforts made by local A/E/C firms and individuals who have a real passion for marketing and communications in our industry. Have you ever wondered how SMPS Seattle Reign Award recipients are chosen and how the judging process works?

Last week, I had the pleasure of assisting in the 2017 Reign Awards submittal entries judging session. As part of the SMPS Seattle Special Event’s committee, my group has the job of planning and executing the awards gala from choosing the venue to preparing the entries for judging to getting the judge’s feedback back to the submitting firms.

For this year’s awards program, we had the highest number of submittals SMPS Seattle has ever received! The 19 submittals were for the following categories: Marketing Campaign, Digital Media Campaign, Brand Experience/Identity, One-Time Marketing Piece, and Small Business Award.

The judges review each of the submittals based on the following criteria: Marketing Objective, Target Audience, Research and Planning, Messaging, Results, Creative Brief, and Overall Creativity, Quality and Content. Each entry is judged on an 80-point system, with each judging criterion worth 10 points, except for the “overall creativity, quality and content” category, worth 20 points. After each category was judged, a winner was revealed based on the total score.

The Small Business Award is available to entries submitted by small business firms, as designated by the Small Business Administrations. The judges select the winner for this category based on the impact and reach of the marketing campaign.

This year, the judges also chose to present a Judge’s Choice award to one submission that went above and beyond all other submissions. There will also be a chance for the Reign Awards gala attendees to voice their opinion with the People’s Choice award, which will be voted on during the event and announced at the end of the program.

For the first time, SMPS Seattle had the tough decision of choosing the four judges from the handful of those in the A/E/C marketing community who volunteered their time to this important role. We were not expecting such a big response to our call for judges, and we were honored to have so many talented marketers step up to the plate. The judges were selected for their expertise in media, design, graphics marketing, and communications in the A/E/C industry. This year’s judges include: Charles McIntyre (Director of Marketing for Cochran), David Winter, P.E., LEED AP (President and CEO of Hart Crowser), Allison Raduziner (Owner of Pilchuck Business Consulting), and Shannon Brush, CPSM, LEED AP (Associate Principal, Marketing, Hargis Engineers). To ensure fairness in the One-Time Marketing Piece category, Charles McIntyre did not provide a score due to a conflict of interest in an entry submitted.

The judges will also offer a snapshot of their feedback for each entry during the Reign Awards Gala. Host Chris Herbert (Business Development at SRSM) will present each category and announce the winning firms.

I hope this was useful information to understanding how the judging process works, and how much time and effort is put into making this a prestigious and spectacular award and event. I hope to see you at the big reveal on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Fare Start’s Pacific Tower from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
