SMPS Seattle President’s Blog Post

Fall has officially come and gone and we’re verging on winter territory. The pumpkin spice lattes are soon to disappear from Starbucks menus (or have they already?!?) to be replaced with pepperminty-mochas. Alas, it’s the season of giving thanks, the season of celebrating, the season of HR reviews, and the season of learning!

SMPS Seattle is riding a wave of great educational programs, thanks to some stellar work by the Education Committee. In September we learned all about AEC finance from the Society President, Chris Rickman, CPSM, FSMPS. In October, we learned interactive interview prep skills from the one and only Susan Murphy. And last week, Stefana Saxton joined us to teach us all about the art of failure, aka Innovation.

Don’t fret if you weren’t able to join us for any of those events – we have many more professional development opportunities in store in the next few months and beyond.

In December, we’ll hear from SMPS, AIA and DBIA Fellows about design-build trends and best practices at the December 6th Fellows Forum. It’s sure to sell out, so register early! In January, we’ll be kicking off another year of great educational luncheons and workshops – save the dates now by checking out our at-a-glance calendar. Also in the new year, we’ll be launching the second year of our Mentorship program – it’s not too early to contact Chris Imbeau if you’re interested in learning more!

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning, if not shouting out loud, that we have several exciting plans in the works for reinvigorating our CPSM study program. Recently certified member Brandon S Peters, CPSM, is our new CPSM Chair, and he’ll be kicking off monthly and quarterly study programs on November 28th. If you’re interested in studying, just want to learn what it’s all about, or simply have questions about becoming a CPSM, feel free to reach out to Brandon.

While, that’s it from me for now, but I’ll leave you with one last tid bit. While you’re prepping for guests or travel, preparing large feasts, and shopping for gifts for loved ones – don’t forget to invest in yourself this holiday season! Growing your skills and enhancing your professional knowledge is always worth making time for, and we hope that SMPS will continue to be your go-to resource for this and more.

Cheers to the final weeks of 2018!

- Erin Hatch, CPSM, SMPS Seattle President
