Sophie Mecham

How long have you been an SMPS member?  Since August 2013.

Why did you join SMPS?  I joined SMPS because I was new to A/E/C marketing and was interested in the topics that SMPS events focused on. In addition, the company I work for has a small marketing/BD team, and I liked the idea of having an extended network to learn from and engage with. I was also encouraged to join by others in the industry who I look up to.

What services does your firm provide?  Transpo Group is a transportation civil engineering firm. We focus on innovative, full-spectrum transportation solutions - transportation planning, traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems, non-motorized planning, transit systems, etc.

What are your firm’s target markets?  We serve public agencies and private developers along the west coast, and also have a strong presence in the Middle East, primarily in Abu Dhabi.

Where do you draw inspiration from?  I draw inspiration from people I know and places I visit. I draw daily inspiration from blogs I follow, such as Joy the Baker, Tofugu, and personal blogs of my friends who live abroad. I'm alos guilty of drawing a little inspiration from my Instagram feed or a good Taylor Swift song.

What ability or skill do you most wish you had (that you don't have already)?  For work purposes, I wish I had a stronger command of InDesign and other Adobe software. Outside of work, I wish I had the ability to speak fluently in a foreign language (preferably Japanese).

What led you to professional services marketing?  When I was searching for a job in marketing/communications, I met with Carly Schaefer (SMPS Past President and fellow Gonzaga alum) for coffee and to learn about her experiences working in the field I was hoping to get into. I enjoyed getting to know her and was interested to learn about marketing in the A/E/C industry, which I was unfamiliar with. She told me about SMPS and encouraged me to use the Seattle Chapter's job bank as a resource. When she heard about an opportunity at Transpo Group that seemed like a good fit, she urged me to apply, and I was fortunate enough to be selected for the position.
