Fellows Forum | Marketing vs. Business Development
What’s the Magic Mix of Sales and Communication?

Our industry has long struggled with the balance between “marketing” and “business development.” What’s the right mix of communications (intentionally stating your firm’s brand and value) and BD (forming and forging personal relationships)? How do firms strategize their investments in these arenas, for example: lunches with clients, attending a trade show, or developing a press/social media campaign? Even more challenging: Can one person have both skills – the writing or graphic skills for producing content and the savoir-faire to build person-to-person contacts that lead to sales?

Join Seattle’s five SMPS Fellows and our special guest as they dive into the (what surely will be lively) details. We’ll clarify terminology, debate staffing approaches, analyze the impact of social media and technology, share horror and success stories, discuss training and staff development, and identify approaches for your firm.

    Event Time:
    4:00 – 4:30 PM: Registration & Networking; 4:30 – 6:30 PM: Program; 6:30—7:00 PM: Networking

ADDED BONUS: The Fellows Build Business Scholarship application is due on April 21. To be eligible, you must have attended at least one Fellows Forum. This is SMPS Seattle’s last Fellows Forum before the deadline – you don’t want to miss to it!

    Guest Speaker

Donald Tuttle | Principal-in-Charge of Business Development, DCI Engineers

Don is DCI’s Principal-in-Charge of Business Development and represents the firm’s engineering talent. He has been DCI’s “booking agent” for new work, partnerships, and strategic marketing since 2010. His 25+ years of experience in the A/E/C industries connected him with an impressive network of professionals and experts. He is always looking at new ways to sharpen his understanding of A/E/C market trends; meet the right people; maintain relationships; and getting DCI’s name in for major proposal bids.

Fueled by a double shot of espresso, Don positions all 10 DCI offices for growth opportunities and increased leadership reputation. He will share his success stories and business development approach which many in the field try to replicate. Don joined the local chapter of SMPS in 1991.
